Inspiration

The inspiration stage of garden landscaping is the creative phase that follows the site survey and precedes detailed design work. Its purpose is to develop ideas, establish a clear vision for the garden, and ensure the design reflects both the site conditions and the client’s aspirations. This stage typically includes the following:

1. Understanding the brief

We explore how you want to use the garden, your lifestyle, preferences, and priorities. This may include entertaining, play, relaxation, wildlife, low maintenance, or year-round interest, as well as budget and timescale considerations.

2. Mood & concept development

Broad design themes are explored, such as contemporary, naturalistic, Mediterranean, cottage, or formal styles. Mood boards may be be created within the scope of project works, showing images, textures, colours, and materials to convey the look and feel of the proposed garden.

3. Precedent & reference research

Inspiration is drawn from other gardens, landscapes, planting styles, and architectural influences. This helps shape ideas for layout, planting structure, and materials while ensuring our design is appropriate for the setting.

4. Spatial ideas & layout principles

Initial thoughts about how the garden might be organised are developed, including zoning for different activities, circulation routes, focal points, and views. These ideas are explored through rough sketches or bubble diagrams rather than detailed plans.

5. Planting character palette

General planting styles are considered, such as structural planting, seasonal colour, or drought-tolerant schemes. At this stage, the focus is on overall character and atmosphere rather than specific plant lists.

6. Materials finishes

Possible hard landscaping materials—such as paving, gravel, timber, or metal—are explored for suitability, durability, and aesthetic compatibility with your house and surroundings.

7. Sustainability & maintenance considerations

Early decisions are made about water use, biodiversity, long-term maintenance, and environmental impact, helping guide later detailed choices.

The inspiration stage results in a clear design direction that both designer and client agree on. This shared vision then informs the next stage: developing a detailed garden layout and planting design.
